It all started off in the Middle of March at a cold Donington Park with the Media Day, that Speedworks were very kind enough to invite us to. It was here that we caught the first sight of the New Face-Lifted Toyota Avensis with it's newly designed livery - one of the best looking cars on the grid. All drivers and all teams were present, eyeing up the competition to see who had what!
So what a season – and what a way to start at Brands Hatch Indy circuit, qualifying on the front row for race one of the season, beating Jeff Smith into the first corner and then managing the race from there to achieve the first top step podium of the season for Tom and the Speedworks team. Race two and race 3 also bought some great points for the team. Donington Park saw the second top step of the season for Speedworks and another set of results to put Tom Ingram firmly in the driving seat for the championship. Thruxton bought both the sunshine and more silverware and Champaign for the team – what a start to the season. Oulton Park however, not one to be too happy with – starting mid pack, Tom got into ‘difficulty’ on lap 4 and had to retire, and race 2 was not much better with another DNF. Race 3 saw Tom achieve the fastest lap – and that is all that could be taken away from that weekend! Surely Croft had to be better – with another DNF in race 2, the weekend was not so special. Snetterton is where Speedworks and Tom got back to form with a mature drive to get some points – no podiums, but solid point to get the team back on track. Knock Hill is where the form returned with a solid race one and two followed by returning to the top step for race 3! Back on top form, Rockingham was looking great with a second row start for the first race, just for the break issue to bring the car in before the race even started. Starting from the back of the pack for race 2 was not the best place to be, but moving from 32nd on the grid to finishing 9th is surely the drive of the season from any driver! Silverstone started off with another top step, 2nd and 4th – what a return to form all in time for the last meeting at Brands Hatch GP. A 3rd in race one, was what the team needed along with another couple of solid results to bring home Independent Champion for 2017, Independent Team Championship, 4th overall team and 3rd overall driver.
What a way to finish the season. This goes to show, you don’t need the biggest budget, you don’t need the biggest team, you don’t even need a manufacturer back car – all you need is one awesome team with the drive and passion to be the best! Well done Tom Ingram and Speedworks Motorsport on such an amazing 2017 season – here is to an even better 2018! Thanks for letting us be a part of this success!
